At the regularly scheduled Burien City Council meeting on Monday, August 20th, 2012, in the time of public hearing that normally takes place at the begining of the meeting, Goodspaceguy called for the Burien City Council to end the requirement for businesses to pay their employees minimum wage.
Goodspaceguy, formally known as Michael Nelson, is no newcomer to politics in Washington. In the election that took place at the beginning of this month, Goodspaceguy ran in the race for the U.S. House seat representing Washington’s 7th District. Goodspaceguy has in fact run in some Washington state election every two years since 2004 when he ran for Governor.
In his speech on August 20th, Goodspaceguy started his speech as he has done at nearly every council meeting since he began attending in 2011 by saying, “Hello, my name is Goodspaceguy” in a language other than english. At this particular meeting he spoke in german. In previous meetings Goodspaceguy stated that this was to demonstrate how people speaking a language other than english hurts communication and works against development. This issue was brought up in response to the City of Burien including multiple articles in the City’s news letter written in spanish.
After introducing himself in german, Goodspaceguy asked the City Council to end the “job killing minimum wage.” And that the federal and state government have caused unemployment in Burien but citizens and local government continue it.
“When people ask for a living wage, they are promoting unemployment. When people ask for pay raises, they are causing unemployment… We need to end minimum wage or educate people on economics.”
The City Council gave no response to Goodspaceguy’s requests.
