Last week, thousands of people participated in our Happy Birthday Burien contest by reading, commenting, sharing and tweeting articles about local Burien businesses.
Thank you to everyone who helped promote Burien’s turning 20 years old! We especially want to thank Burien Press, White Cap Frozen Yogurt, Vino Bello Wine Bar & Shop, Skin Perfect, A Place for Pets and Oliver’s Bite for providing the prizes for our contest.
Below is our list of winners. Each person won a $20 gift card from one of the participating businesses. Gift cards can be picked up from each of these businesses, with a valid ID, starting today. (more…)
Editor’s Note: On February 28, 2013, Burien will be 20 years old; just old enough to no longer be called a teen, but still not old enough to buy beer. To celebrate Burien’s exit from the teenage years, we are partnering with a number of local businesses to give away $20 gift cards. Each day we will publish an article about an independent Burien business who will be giving a gift card away. To win the gift card, all participants have to do is leave a comment on the article (the comment can say whatever you want and will not influence your chances of winning) and share the article with the hashtag “#happybirthdayburien” Winners will be selected at Random and will be able to pick their prize up on March 1st at the appropriate participating business. Happy birthday Burien and good luck Burienites!
White Cap Frozen Yogurt is Burien’s first and only independent frozen yogurt joint. The family owned business opened in the Five Corners strip mall with Trader Joe’s and Freedom Fitness less than one year ago, on July 4, 2012.
“We wanted to create a fun environment for all ages. Right now we are just focusing on getting off the ground but we are really looking forward to getting more involved in Burien’s community.”
Paul Cesmat told me last year when I interviewed him, his wife Becky, and his three children Nicole, Sean, and Josh last August for our first story on White Cap which can be read here. (more…)

Burien Press is Burien’s original independent coffee shop. The establishment was first opened in May of 2009 with the idea of providing a central gathering place for the community while supporting local artists and serving quality coffee and pastries.
Local Burien artist, Lory Newsom is currently holding her first independent show at Burien Press through March 8th. On March 9th the art of Seattle’s Pope, who describes himself as a “curator of images of the world,” will be on display.
Burien Press serves coffee from Seattle’s Caffe Vita as well as pastries from Macrina Bakery and breakfast and lunch sandwiches made in-house. Open seven days a week, Burien Press does business from 6am to 6pm on weekdays and 7am to 6pm on weekends.
A $20 gift card to Burien Press can buy you exactly seven large Italian sodas, six 8oz lattes, or two americanos with 12 shots in each, as well as a number other beverage combinations. (more…)

Press Release: The Other B-Town
A second city plays host to first-tier artists.
Burien is a lucky little city. Usually, being so close to Seattle means that residents need to travel a half hour (or more) north to participate in world-class cultural events. On Saturday evening, May 19th, they won’t need to travel further than 152nd street.
Acclaimed artist, Susie J. Lee, has brought, Rain Shower, an LED/Sound installation recently on view at the Frye Art Museum, to Parallel Public Lab, an experimental art and media space. The dark underground lab is an ideal space to exhibit a work that relies on surrounding you with droplets of light and sound. Not since it was on view at the Lawrimore in 2007, will this work be so immersive.
