Highline Schools Foundation Announces Winners of 2012 STIA Scholarship

Press Release: Announcing 2012 STIA Scholarship Winners

Burien, WA - June 18, 2012 – The Highline Schools Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA) Scholarship for 2012. This scholarship is a needs-based scholarship and is awarded annually to three graduating seniors from Highline School District who will be pursuing a college education. Two $14,000 awards (paid over 2 years) are made to students who will be attending four-year colleges and one $8,000 award (paid over 2 years) is made to a student attending a two-year college or vocational school.

Shuba Koroso

Shuba graduated from Global Connections High School and plans to attend Highline Community College where she will study Nursing. Shuba’s teacher, Jennifer L. Wittenberg, had this to say about Shuba: “Shuba is a highly motivated student who has a clear sense of where she comes from and where she is going in her brilliant future. She is one of the hardest-working students I have ever encountered.”

Kily Nhan

Kily graduated from Highline High School and plans on attending the Washington State University where he will study Pharmacy. Laura Weist, counselor at Highline High School wrote in her letter of recommendation: “Kily excels in a way that represents a truly admirable balance of excellent academic performance, personal skills and social qualities.”

Sandra Zimmermann

Sandy graduated from Big Picture High School and plans to attend Seattle Pacific University where she will study Business & Art. Kimberly Manthei, a mentor at Starbucks Coffee Company where Sandy was an intern writes “l have not met another student like her in the 5 years of our mentoring program. Mature, positive, she communicates effectively embracing life and all it has to offer.”

2012 marks the 12th anniversary of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Scholarship Charity Golf Tournament (sponsored by employees of HMS Host and volunteer employees and contractors of the Port of Seattle) to benefit the Highline Schools Foundation.

The proceeds from the tournament have contributed just under $1 million to the fund supporting educational scholarships and programs for the youth of the Highline School District.

This year’s Golf Tournament will be held on July 16, 2012 at Fairwood Golf & Country Club in Renton. The Entry Level Golf Team includes golf for four players, cart, range balls, golf pro-shop voucher, a golfer’s gift package, on-course refreshments, and dinner. The Hole Sponsor Level Golf Team includes all the above plus golf attire, signage on the tee, advertising on the Sponsorship Board and name in tournament program.
