Memorial Day has its roots in the Civil War. It was put to practice to remember the Union and Confederate soldiers. Originally called Decoration Day, this day of remembrance has evolved to not only remember American soldiers of all times but also to celebrate the beginning of summer. With the weather changing (hopefully!) and BBQ’s firing up, this provides a perfect opportunity to build community. Read On...Tags: Memorial Day | Community | BBQ | Alexis Braga | May 2011

Restaurant Review |
Thai Corner Cuisine is, in many ways, a Burien landmark. It’s right on the corner of 1st Ave and 148th St, and chances are that you pass it everyday without giving it a second thought. To many, Thai Corner is just one of those buildings that they pass as they are coming and going to and from Burien. To others, Thai Corner is an opportunity to express what they think is an original joke by calling it “Thai Hop” because it is housed in a classic IHOP building. Regardless to what you think of their building, it’s what’s inside that really makes Thai Corner fantastic.
Thai Corner Cuisine was purchased by its current owner, Usa (pronounced Ew-saw), five years ago. Usa moved to the Seattle area from Thailand twenty years ago and has since opened a second Thai restaurant which is called Thai One On in Lake City.
Now I’ll admit that even though I’m a Thai food lover to the core... Read On...Tags: Thai Food | Thai Corner Cuisine | Burien Restaurant | B-Town Business | Local Business | Restaurant Review | May 2011

My first frustration: so many gardening books are written to be universal for all climates in the United States. Well, Burien's climate is nothing like prime gardening weather in California or even Eastern Washington.

The City of Burien has done a great job of giving Burien residents the opportunity to share their opinions. Few cities in Washington have done as much to give their citizens a voice.
One problem that the City of Burien has faced in this process is the lack of participation from many residents throughout many of the neighborhoods in Burien. This is demonstrated in the map displayed below which was produced by the City of Burien’s GIS department... EventsAs all Burien residents know, it’s always sunny in Burien but occasionally we get a lot of the precipitation coming from rainy Seattle. This rain keeps our lawns green and our air fresh, but it also washes garbage and pollution off the streets, into storm drains, and out into the Puget Sound. Burien residents can prevent some of this pollution by planting rain gardens.

NewsSo far in 2011, the City of Burien has been pushing to get Burien residents’ opinions about what they want for the future of this community. They have hosted Vision for Burien meetings in various Burien neighborhoods as well as posting an online survey.
Burien Parks and Recreation recently posted a short survey asking the question: “What should recreation and parks in Burien look like in the future?” The survey gives residents the opportunity to voice their opinions about how the city should or shouldn’t spend our tax dollars. This survey will be closing on May 11, 2011, which only leaves people a few days to take it.
The simple fact is that if we don’t take opportunities like this to express our opinions to the city, we have no right to complain when the city goes and does something else. Maybe you think that Burien needs a dog park or maybe you think Lake Burien should be opened to the public...
