Last January, Freggies, an organic produce delivery company based out of downtown Burien, announced that they would be offering a special “Burien Only” deal to help make eating fresh and organic produce more affordable and realistic to residents in Burien. The “Burien Only” deal allows those who sign up to pick up a box of organic produce from Freggies warehouse in the SW 152nd St Alley once a week or every other week for a flat rate of $24 which turns out to be a loss for Freggies.
Towards the end of January, we picked up a Freggies box and priced the whole thing out so that those who were interested in the getting a box could have a better idea of what they were signing up for. The result, which can be read here, was $55 worth of organic produce if ordered from Amazon Fresh. (more…)

Editor’s Note: On February 28, 2013, Burien will be 20 years old; just old enough to no longer be called a teen, but still not old enough to buy beer. To celebrate Burien’s exit from the teenage years, we are partnering with a number of local businesses to give away $20 gift cards. Each day we will publish an article about an independent Burien business who will be giving a gift card away. To win the gift card, all participants have to do is leave a comment on the article (the comment can say whatever you want and will not influence your chances of winning) and share the article with the hashtag “#happybirthdayburien” so we can track the posts. Winners will be selected at random and will be able to pick their prize up on March 1st at the appropriate participating business. Happy birthday Burien and good luck Burienites!
For our final gift card giveaway in celebration of Burien’s 20th birthday, we are partnering with Burien’s new family owned cupcake bakery, Oliver’s Bite.

Oliver’s Bite will offer signature cupcakes and allow customers to design their own cupcakes. You can read all about Oliver’s Bite in our original publication earlier this month, here.
For their first week of business, the Akiho family is offering 10% off to all customers. On Wednesday night, Oliver’s Bite launched their Facebook page. If you would like to stay up to date on what’s going on at their new bakery, you need to go “Like” the page which can be found here.

Burien, WA. officially turned the ripe old age of 20 years old today! That’s right, Burien is no longer a teenager but still isn’t old enough to buy beer. In celebration of Burien’s birthday, the Burien City Council will be holding a brief time of celebration at their next meeting on Monday, March 4th at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration.
Today, the City of Burien sent out “A Brief History of Burien’s Incorporation.” We’ve included it below so you can learn a little more about your city.
Burien, a Southwest King County Community, with a rich and unique history of tradition, culture, environment, and heritage of more than 100 years, officially because the 269th City in the state of Washington on February 28, 1993, after an overwhelming vote of support (by a margin of 2 to 1) for incorporation on March 10, 1992. Thus was born a city with a population of 27,700, the 22nd largest city in Washington. After four separate unsuccessful attempts to incorporate as a city during the past 40 years, the citizens of this community decided to control their own destiny and bring their local government closest to the people, thus providing needed public service delivery functions that are efficient, cost-effective and accountable. The last incorporation effort in 1984, if it had been successful, would have created a City of Highline, with an estimated population of 85,000. It would have covered a much larger area stretching from the City of Seattle city limits on the north, to the current City of SeaTac on the east, to the current City of Des Moines on the south, and to Normandy Park on the west.
